Our Services
At City Chiropractic, we offer a unique and effective treatment approach to manage pain and conditions from relief to recovery. While chiropractic manipulation helps restore joint mobility and alignment, we also use exercise rehabilitation and various muscle and soft-tissue therapies to address any muscular weakness, imbalance or damage that often results from injury. This combined approach to treatment means fewer treatment sessions are usually needed and longer-lasting results obtained.
The following are short descriptions of some of the therapies that may be used as part of a standard treatment plan:
Chiropractic
Chiropractic is the primary treatment intervention used at the surgery. It is most beneficial in cases of spinal discomfort (back & neck pain), disc injuries, nerve irritation (sciatica, pins & needles in the arms, etc.), and for headaches. These conditions often result from misalignments of the bones of the spine that develop from poor posture, repetitive strain, improper lifting, whiplash or other injuries. Chiropractic adjustments help restore the normal alignment and motion of the spine, which alleviates painful pressure while correcting the source of the problem. Myofascial Techniques
In conjunction with chiropractic treatment, we regularly use specialized muscle manipulation techniques, or myofascial techniques, in the treatment of sports injuries and other soft-tissue conditions. With many injuries, muscles in the surrounding areas may become damaged and tense, thus increasing the amount of pain and dysfunction experienced. Myofascial techniques involve stretching these muscles while applying precise pressure to the “knots” that often develop, quickly reducing tension and relieving pain.
Graston Technique
Another therapy that may be used in conjunction with your chiropractic treatment is Graston technique, a form of cross-friction massage using a set of specially designed tools. Similar to manual myofascial techniques, the goals with Graston Technique are to reduce tension in the muscles surrounding an injured area to speed healing time and reduce pain. By addressing both the joint and muscular aspects of an injury, fewer treatments are usually needed and longer-lasting results obtained.
Massage Therapy
Massage therapy is the manual manipulation of the soft tissues (muscles) of the body to help enhance function and flexibility, improve circulation, and relieve tension and stress. Our massage therapist, Jutina McElligott, offers a variety of massage techniques to meet each client’s individual requirements, where benefits range from relaxation and stress relief to injury rehabilitation and performance enhancement. At City Chiropractic, massage may be used alone or in conjunction with chiropractic treatment, depending on the nature of the condition and the extent of soft-tissue involvement. Please contact the surgery on (091) 567 055 for booking and scheduling information for massage.
PNF Stretching
PNF is an acronym for ‘proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitatation’, and is the most effective stretching method known to increase flexibility. It is an assisted form of stretching in which a muscle is alternately contracted and then stretched passively to achieve maximum range of motion and dramatically reduce muscular tension. While PNF stretching is best performed during treatment, the stretches can be taught for home use or for training purposes.
Ergonomic Consultation
‘Ergonomics’ is the science of making your environment “fit” your individual body size and type. Improperly sized or ill-fitting equipment, either at home, at work or for sport can lead to a variety of injuries. Therefore, as part of your treatment program, recommendations on making specific changes to improve the ‘ergonomics’ of your workspace may be made to help you recover more quickly and prevent recurrence of injuries.
T.O.G. GaitScan (prescription orthotic insoles)
Small abnormalities of the feet (i.e. “flat feet” / “fallen arches”) can cause changes in your gait (your walking pattern) and lead to foot pain and discomfort elsewhere in the body. If we suspect your feet may be responsible for your back, leg or knee pain, a computerized foot and gait assessment using the GaitScan system will be performed. This system scans and analyses your feet at various points during your step to precisely determine if a foot abnormality exist. If a problem is found, orthotic therapy (prescription insoles) may be recommended to restore normal foot function, and help relieve back pain or problems elsewhere.
(If you have back pain that responds to treatment but returns weeks or months later, you may be a candidate for orthotic therapy. Click here for other signs of poor foot function and for more information on custom foot orthotics.)
Personalized Rehabilitation Exercise Programs
Many injuries, especially those of a chronic nature, often result in a loss of normal muscle strength and conditioning, even after the pain has subsided. While most people are unaware of this residual weakness, it actually places them at higher risk for re-injury. Therefore, to ensure a safe return to work, activities or sport, we will prescribe a personalized, step-by-step program of progressive exercises to supplement treatment or as a follow-up to care. The programs are designed to strengthen and rehabilitate identified weak areas, but are usually simple enough to be performed at home or using inexpensive exercise aids.
General Health Information
Beyond the formal therapy provided during treatment sessions, our chiropractors are always available to provide information, offer advice or to discuss general health issues, including diet and exercise, manual handling, posture, nutritional supplementation, or anything that will help enhance the benefit of treatment and promote healthier lifestyles. We are also available to speak to groups, businesses or associations about chiropractic, chiropractic sports injury management, and other health topics.
Products
A number of helpful support products are available from the surgery, including cold packs, and various support aids such as lumbar supports and orthopaedic pillows.
(Important: When purchasing orthopaedic products, receiving proper instruction on their use is essential to their benefit and your satisfaction. Especially when buying an orthopaedic pillow, choosing the right one for your body type is very important, and our staff can help you make the appropriate choice.)
